Girl Badly Injured in Bakersfield Dog Bite Attack

Children and dogs tend to be seen together often.  While the majority of these interactions go well, things can and sometimes do go seriously wrong, leaving the children nearby in a situation of danger that few if any of them completely understand.  Such appears to have been the case with a Bakersfield dog bite attack over the weekend that badly injured a 3-year-old girl.

According to witnesses, the latest Bakersfield dog attack started innocently enough on Mount View Avenue when 3-year-old Naveah Sherrell of Taft was playing in the front yard of a relative’s house with two other children when the neighbor’s dog, a 2-year-old English Mastiff, got loose and came to them.  The girl gave the dog bread and apparently moved to hug the dog, and the dog bit her in response.  The girl was badly injured in her face where she was bitten and still has scars.  The dog, which has no history of problems, is under quarantine.

Dog Bite Attack Statistics

First and foremost, we hope that the little girl who was harmed is able to recover from her injuries and that her facial scarring is not permanent.  She had to be sent to the hospital for her treatment.  In addition, this Bakersfield dog bite attack will now become part of the overall statistics regarding dog bites.  Every year in the United States, more than 4 million dog bit attacks occur, and almost one million people require medical attention as a result.  34 people were killed in these occurrences in 2010, and the majority of those harmed are children.

Bakersfield Personal Injury Lawyers

It seems that the dog’s owner did not know that his dog had gotten loose.  However, that would not necessarily help him avoid liability if a California personal injury lawsuit is filed in response to this incident.  If a case is filed and is successful, it’s possible that the family could recover damages that compensate them for their medical costs past and future if additional surgery is required and for the child’s pain and suffering.

If you have been harmed by a dog, you need to seek the help of Bakersfield personal injury lawyers who have been holding those responsible for inflicting these types of injuries accountable for many years.  Contact Chain | Cohn | Stiles today to schedule a free initial consultation.
